Leningrad region poses a barrier to African swine fever

In view of the continuing spread of ASF on the European part of Russia, in the region there are four additional veterinary and police post on the federal highways and decided to fully translate the number of pigs in the peasant smallholdings and farms.

Provincial Veterinary Office implements departmental target program "Preventing the occurrence and spread of African swine fever in the territory of the Leningrad Region for 2013-2015».

Her goal - conversion of small-scale farms and smallholdings, growing pigs for personal use on other types of livestock. In the area, there are about 1,330 farms, which for obvious reasons can not provide animal health protection against the penetration of ASF virus.

Under the terms of the agreements concluded with the owners of private plots and peasant farms, the latter undertake to completely abandon the cultivation of pigs over the next five years. For this, together with the sales price they receive a state subsidy of 75 rubles per 1 kilogram of body weight.

To date, decide on a voluntary conversion into 21 individual farms and smallholdings, have in total 732 head of livestock. The third part of them have focused on downhole points. Over 52 heads of the budget paid four hundred sixty-six thousand rubles compensation.

According to statistics, as of 1 January 2013 the number of pigs in the Leningrad region was 197,000 head, or more than twenty-two percent of the index of the North-West Federal District. 94% (185.6 thousand heads) pigs were in the large agricultural companies.

epizootic of African swine fever has already happened in the village of Volodarka Krasnoselski district of the Leningrad region in 2011. Then the cause of infection are food waste from the military unit that have been used as feed for pigs.
