European pig industry is in need of anti-crisis measures because of Russian restrictions on pork imports from the EU. This was stated by the EU Commissioner for Agriculture Dacian Ciolos, commenting on the European Commission to appeal the WTO about the creation of a panel of judges to resolve the dispute.

«For 5 months of the ban European pork producers lost exports worth around 580 million euros," - quoted an official in the official report of the European Commission.

Russia cut off almost 25% of total exports of pork products from the EU, closed its market to European live pigs and pork, the report says. Trade ban has led to significant losses for the EU agricultural sector.

In 2013, the European pork exports to Russia amounted to 1.4 billion euros, reports Prime.

European Union requires the establishment of a panel of experts at the World Trade Organization / WTO / challenging the legitimacy of the introduction of the ban on Moscow European pork to Russia because of the threat of infection of African swine fever in January 2014. "So, the ban is contrary to international trade rules, Europe has no choice but to ask for the creation of a group within the WTO" - are reported EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht.

Russia and the European Union have tried to solve the dispute through bilateral consultations with April 2014.
