Abstract. What does the word ham mean? The question of its origin remains controversial, but it can still be argued that it is purely Slavic and comes from the opposition of fresh meat from a freshly killed animal (“fresh”), and meat prepared for future use. Ham (in the old days they used to say exactly “vetshina”) - from the word dilapidated, old, it is a piece of salted, smoked or dried meat, which is stored for a long time, remaining edible. Here is the etymology. For the first time, the recipe for making ham is found in the treatise of the Roman scientist Mark Terrentius Varro - "On Agriculture" back in the 1st century BC.
