A new study by American scientists raised concerns about the use of beta-agonists in animal feed.

A new study by American scientists showed that the number of livestock deaths associated with the use of beta- agonists in animal feed , much higher than the official statistics producers of the drug. In the United States are allowed to use two types of beta- agonists : zilpaterol hydrochloride and ractopamine hydrochloride . The study was published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE. Researchers from Texas Tech University found that between 2011 and 2012 , more than 3,800 head of cattle that are on 10 feedlots , died as a result of the introduction of ractopamine and zilpaterol in their diet. " By itself, the death of cattle on feedlots rare , so the data presented in this paper strongly suggest that the increase in the number of deaths of animals during grain-fed is associated with the use of growth promoters " - say researchers . In response, manufacturers of these drugs - the pharmaceutical companies Zilmax and Elanco Animal Health researchers have criticized the methodology and noted that these feed additives approved by the quality control of food products, medicines and cosmetics (FDA). Hormonal growth promoters , known as beta- agonists are feed additives that increase the muscle mass of animals , but their use is not approved in many countries . About 160 countries do not allow the import of beef that has been exposed to beta- agonists. The advantage of using these drugs is a fast set of muscle mass in cattle during its fattening on feedlots . Beta - agonists can improve uptake and enhance feed efficiency of 10 to 30 percent, which increases the weight of the carcass 5 to 15 kilograms. Currently, more companies are opposed to the use of beta- agonists in meat production for the very reason that the drugs bad for the health of livestock, which starts to limp and eventually simply refuses to walk because of muscle pain .
